A married friend of mine went on a windjammer cruise with some girlfriends and came home crushing on the captain, who had piercing blue eyes, Sean Connery’s voice, and the body of a man who wrestles with the sea. While fanning herself, she told me she’d been tempted, really tempted to break her marriage vows and asked me if I’d ever felt the same way. I told her no, that whenever I wanted another man (no offense, hubby,) I just go to my office and write me up one.

So, let’s do that. What is your perfect man like? The one that steps out of the pages of whatever you’re reading and makes you sigh or moan or blush? Is he just a pretty torso on a book cover? Is he friendly or dark and brooding like Winston Sawyer in THE WISDOM OF HAIR? When he pops off the page, how long does he stay with you? Do you think about him often or once you reach THE END, are you done with him?

Admittedly, Winston is freaking gorgeous, but is no prize in the personality department. Neither is Christian Grey of the famous FIFTY series, but is he the perfect man? He’s young, rich, also freaking gorgeous, but what makes tens of millions of women want to read his story?

My theory is yes, he is all of that, but he does 3 very important things. He worships Anna. He begs her to spend his endless supply of money. And lastly, and most importantly, he wants to feed her all the time. Who wouldn’t love a man like that?

The book I’m writing now has a very different leading man. Frank Darling is not rich, he’s handsome but not drop dead gorgeous, and he’s a nice guy. The question is, can a nice guy cut it in a Christian Grey world? What do you think?

  1. Hmmm, yes, I think for some of us Frank Darling would definitely be a keeper. 🙂 But you know, sexy eyes are kinda nice, too . . . and strong hands.

  2. My favourite leading men are the accidentally antisocial kind – you know, the sort of guy who just doesn’t quite notice the heroine at first, because he’s so wrapped up in something else. Usually his work, usually something artistic or technical. Of course, smouldering good looks don’t hurt 😉

  3. Personally, I like a man with a strong personality… both in books and real life. Assertiveness is sexy, perhaps most of all because of all the responsibilities we as women deal with every day? I mean, on some days, I’m just thrilled not to have to decide whether to cook chicken or steak!

As for Frank Darling, I’m sure he can make it in his book’s world, because you are a talented writer! It sounds like he has potential, and for many readers, being “hot and rich” like Christian Grey is so far removed from reality that the story becomes difficult.

    Looking forward to reading!
